NoVo grantee, Facing History and Ourselves, is an educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. By studying the historical development and lessons of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives. Facing History’s ultimate goal is the development of a critical mass of citizens who are committed to responsible civic participation and to building strong, inclusive communities.
Facing History’s groundbreaking integration of the study of history and literature and innovative teaching strategies and its extraordinary professional development programs enables teachers to promote students’ historical understanding, critical thinking skills, and empathy. As students learn about prejudice and discrimination in the past, they reflect on the choices they confront and consider how they can make a difference themselves.
